Hang En (meaning Swallow Cave in Vietnamese, named for the birds that nest in it), is known to be the third largest cave in the world. The cave has its own jungle, waters, beach, and climate. The cave goes through a mountain for 1,645 metres, has a height of around 100 metres, and a maximum width of approximately 170 metres. It was first explored by a team of British cavers in 1994, but has been used by the local Vietnamese for centuries as a short cut through the jungle. Ethnic minorities from local villages use the cave as a shelter during strong storms and often collect the nesting swallows to eat as a local delicacy. Hang En was recently featured in the Hollywood feature film Pan, representing part of Neverland. Not only is the cave truly spectacular, but the hike through the jungle to get to it makes in one of the most incredible trips available in Phong Nha.
The only way to see Hang En is on a guided tour of either the Hang Son Doong Expedition, or the Hang En Adventure Cave Camp. The tour involves 2 km of jungle and mountain trekking, multiple river crossings and 4km of caving. We believe it is one of the greatest tours you can do in Vietnam!
