Named after the Tra Ang River, this spectacular resurgence cave is reached following Highway 20 from Son Trach towards the Laos border. After 14k from Son Trach just after the mausoleum and shrine on the left of the road a path leads down to the river in the bottom of the valley. This is the river that sinks in boulders and joins the Phong Nha Cave. Upstream a path for 700m leads through leech country to a huge cliff with a river exiting from a large cave entrance. This is the beautiful entrance to Hang Tra Ang. Hang Tra Ang can be visited on a handful of tours: the 1 day Jungle Boss National Park Tour, the 1 day Ma Da Valley Tour and the 2 days, 1 night Ma Da & Abandoned Valley Tour.
Inside the main entrance a superb sandy area is found, perfect for an underground camp. The cave is only 667m long the main passage ending in a sump. The main river passage contains the majority of the Phong Nha water. Nearly all the main passage involves swimming. Upper levels of the cave near the entrance lead to gour balconies and another entrance was found which was a flood overflow from the main passage.
